Both English and Chinese tourist site texts aim to attract tourists by conveying information.From the perspective of text function, this kind of text has two functions: information function and call function.Among them, the calling function is the leading function and the inner function, because the ultimate purpose of tourism materials is to attract tourists and stimulate their desire to visit.However, tourists want to get relevant information and knowledge of Beijing before they decide to visit a certain place and when they visit a scenic spot. Therefore, information is also an important function of tourism materials and a prerequisite for the realization of the calling function.
In the English and Chinese tourist site introduction text, the Chinese expression of the gorgeous and beautiful and the English expression of the intuitive and lively itinerary is a sharp contrast.The typical Chinese tourism text often conveys information with concise and implicit words, ornate words, rhetoric and tautology, emphasis on antithesis, general description of scenery, and emphasis on the vague beauty of description language.While the English text is concise and clear in terms of words, rigorous in logic, plain in style, concise in style, mostly objective and specific in description, and intuitive in description.
The linguistic differences between English and Chinese tourist site introduction texts also show the use of rhetoric devices.In Chinese, a large number of four-character words, reduplicated words and parallel sentences are often used to enhance the expression and achieve the rhetorical effect.In contrast, the description in English often gives the reader an impression by providing details, leaving the reader to judge for himself.In terms of language, it takes noun, verb, adverb and non-predicate verb as the main components of the structure, and usually provides real and effective information of tourist attractions in the form of narration.
A large number of corpus show that there are differences between English and Chinese tourist site introduction texts in terms of information content and the order of communication.On the basis of mastering a large amount of corpus, Yang min and Ji aimei made a comparative analysis of the information functions of Shandong tourism chapter and English tourism chapter.The Qilu tourism chapter highlights the social identity characteristics of tourism materials, such as social impact, historical evolution and development performance, and highlights the scenery and cultural characteristics of tourism resources, especially the praise and description of the landscape in historical books, literary works and poems.The results of this study have important implications for us to study the conversion of information functions of English and Chinese tourist site introduction texts.
The translation theory used in this kind of research is an overview of functional translation theory.In the 1970s,German scholars put forward the theory of functional translation.At the heart of the theory are three aspects:The essence of translation,Participants in the translation process and the Principles of functional theory of translation.Its representatives include Katharina Reiss, Hans J.Vemeer and Christiane Nord.This theory is a great breakthrough for the traditional "equal intuitions".It provides a new perspective for the study of translation theory.In the early 1990s, Nord put forward the principle of "function plus fidelity" on the basis of the original theory, and defined translation as follows:Its relationship to its source text will be materialized according to the intended or required function of the translation.Translation enables the smooth operation of communicative behaviors that cannot be carried out due to the objective language barrier.In this definition, Nords emphasized between the original and the translation must have a connection, the connection of the quality and quantity be determined by the expected function of translation, it is also to decide what ingredients are in a specific context of the original can be preserved, what can or should be carried out according to the target language context and even rewriting provides standard adjustment.Comparing with the traditional "equal intuitions", the superiority of the translation function theory is obvious.The inspiration it brings to the translator is: fully understand their role in translation;Enhance cross-cultural awareness;Considering the receptivity and expectation of the translation readers;Respect the original, but not rigidly adhere to the original language form, content and function.
