A. Review of the literature.

The current state of domestic research.

Nowadays,there have been many discussions on the kind of translation theory that is to be established in China. Some scholars advocate the setting up of a translation theory with distinctive Chinese characteristics, while others are against it and take the importation of western translation theories as a shortcut and the only alternative,and still others are calling for the development of translation studies with universal significance.Scholar Liu Miqing point out that Chinese translation theory must have Chinese characteristics, because there is no translation in the world that is divorced from mother language and culture.

The current state of foreign research.

The second half of the 20th century witnessed great changes in western translation studies, which no longer restricted itself to the discussions on translation criteria, the conveyance of linguistic elements and literary styles, but has extensively broadened its boundary by drawing upon theories of other disciplines, such as philosophy, sociology, psychology,semiotics and cultural studies.

Instead of being confined to the translated text, translation studies concerns itself more with the extralinguistic elements:the initiator who proposes or sponsors the translation of a certain work, the translator who produces the target text and the receiver that involves not only the target reader but the target cultural environment as a whole. 

Translation has been surveyed in a marco cultural context, where the function and the significance of translation are examined. Thus, translation has been viewed not only as a cross-cultural communication activity, but also as a unique political, cultural and literary action. And the translated text, manipulated by a variety of forces, plays a role, essential sometimes, in the politics, culture, even daily life of the taret society.
