1 . Research on English movie idioms at abroad.

 Firstly, the functions of English idioms. "Halliday believes that the nature of language determines people's requirements for language, that is, the functions that language must perform. Such functions are, of course, ever-changing and have infinite possibilities, but we can reduce them to a limited number of abstract functions, which are pure functions or meta-functions. Rubin (2004) said that the pure theoretical functions of language has three types: conceptual functions, interhuman functions and discourse functions, and analyzes the embodiment of these three functions in English. 

Pragmatic meaning has multiple pragmatic functions in communicative activities.(Cited in "Collins COBUILD dictionary of English idioms" (1998) There is a saying that idioms have important pragmatics in a language. The Idioms have important pragmatic functions in language. 

English idiom is a kind of idiomatic usage and special table of English national language. As an important part of the English language, the method of attainment has the relationship between parts and the whole. The common feature of the English language -the pure theoretical function, must be reflected from the unique part of English idioms(Simposon,1992).

2. Domestic research on English movie idioms.

Liu Xin（2008） analyzes the communicative pragmatic functions of English idioms, including ideation, communication and evaluation, and so on.

Ni ling (2011) analyzed idioms of classic movie clips in movie dialogues, as well as their spirit and value, such as the classic clips in "forrest gump".

For the multivariate characteristics of English idioms, Luo Shiping(2007) points out that English idioms have structural characteristics and semantic characteristics. The author will describe and analyze the characteristics in the following chapter. 

In general, the research English vocabulary and idioms in English films and television works in China and abroad are not specific，systematic and perfect, and there is no complete unified description and illustration of the definition, characteristics, and functions of English film idioms.
