Literature Review

The Catcher in the Rye, one of the American classic Literature in twentieth Century, epitomized on the growing pains of the high school and college students. Based on the previous studies, this paper makes a deeper analysis of the character of the Holden in the aspects of the social environment and the life background. Below is the research status of the topic.

1) About the abroad related research status 

“The Cather in the Rye” led a new creation trend of American Literature. The “New York Times” wrote the book that in the United States, read “the Cather in the Rye” as important as getting the acceptance from teacher when graduate from schools. American literary critic Glanville Sikesi said: “I am sure that there are millions of young Americans feel more close to JD Salinger than any other writers.”

2) About the domestic related research status 

In China, "The Catcher in the Rye" as a critical material first translated into Chinese on 1960s by Mr. Shi Xianrong for internal use. In 1983, Mr. Shi Xianrong's translation was published by the Lijiang publishing house. After a period of silence. In 1988, Yu Jianhua <a repeat of the scene: the choice of life on the cliff> (<Journal of Shanghai Normal University >1988 the first Issue), Yin Dexiang on <the catcher in the Rye" protagonist Holden Caulfield > (<foreign literature review 1988 the second issue> and Wang Hairu's <a traitor - victims of fate> (<Journal of Nanjing Normal University> in 1988 the fourth Issue) have been published, these began to attract critical attention. After 1992, the book has publish by Yilin press, editing by both English and Chinese. With the publication of volume expansion, the book begin to increase on academic journals, newspapers, the comments from 1994.

In the domestic research, mainly comments about this book from following 

a) The first representative work of "the beat generation", which earlier proposed this view by Mr. Shi Xianrong in 1982 published <contemporary American Literature> under 1982 the fourth issue. Especially for the 1993 Zhejiang Art Publishing House edition appendix written in [1] (P426-449), he detailed analysis of all aspects of the novel, he pointed out that Holden's contradiction personality, its character "obvious characteristics of Existentialism “& Holden as the first anti-hero image in American contemporary literature, and Mr. Shi comments < a new generation of American silent protest>, these information are high frequency quote in the following. Overall , most of the papers believes that Salinger and his characters Holden, are also the representative of the"beat generation", but unlike the later “beat generation" , they still pursuit of ideals and look forward to a better future. Many of the textbooks in China have accepted the idea of Mr. Shi in different degrees.

b)A work critique American society's realistic who adopt the traditional social and historical analysis method , and believed that this work criticizes the hypocrisy, corruption and cruelty of the American society ,such as, Li Zhengrong's <escape and rebellion> (<foreign literature research >in 1997 third), Zhujin’s <catcher in the Rye > about rebelling pedantry and hypocrisy of the modern classic (<Journal of social science of Jilin University> the 2002 fourth issue).

c) A psychological masterpiece describe the spirit of the United States in 50s youth, lot of papers analyze this topic, which adopt the general use of social history psychological analysis method, about Holden's psychological world. As Yu Jianhua said, one of the reasons for this novel success is cater to youth psychological between find a way out and no way out. Typical Holden is the reproduction of American youth mental after the World War II. Zhang Zhihua’s < modern disease patients struggle and loss> (<Journal of Panzhihua University 1998 the sixth issue>) focuses on the analysis of Holden's" external performance the potential desire contradiction.

"The catcher in the Rye" get attention not only because the author has created a new artistic style, but more importantly detailed depiction a middle-class children depression, loss of spiritual world and reveal the real essence of capitalist social spiritual civilization. This article will combine the previous research on the Holton for a deeper level of analysis.
