As we all know, The study of metaphor has a long history. The earliest study of metaphor in the West can be dated back to as early as Aristotle, who defines metaphors as “the application to one thing of a name belonging to another thing”. Therefore metaphor has always been regarded as a rhetorical device for a long time. However, with the development of modern science and cognition of human beings, things have changed since 1980, especially the publication of Metaphor We Live by which was written by Lakoff&Johnson. The book turns metaphor from rhetoric to cognition. Then the role of metaphor in cognition is established.The present study of metaphor is divided into three major directions: rhetoric studies, metaphysical studies and linguistic studies. Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device, but also a model of thought and effective tool for human beings to recognize new things. Metaphor is considered as a creative thinking ability of human beings, it is important and necessary for human beings to understand the world, especially to understand the abstract things.The paper has done research on the cognitive meaning of metaphor from the angle of cognitive thinking in order to improve the research perspectives of English language and culture further.
