A. Literature Review

Abstract

In the process of cross-cultural communication, both countries have a strong desire to succeed in communication. But there is a distance between desire and reality. Communication frustration or failure and misunderstanding always happen. Many people thought this is because of language barrier. In many cases, language is not a hindrance to communicate. Many problems in intercultural communication, including misunderstanding, unhappiness, tension, and even serious consequences, are caused by the fact that both parties which they do not understand their cultural customs.

Custom is the development and inheritance of a nation in specific historical conditions and geographical environment, it is the symbol and embodiment of a cultural form, the reflection and embodiment of a nation's values, social psychology and moral traditions, and also helps to cultivate sentiment, regulate behavior and maintain good interpersonal relations. Cultural customs play such an important role in cross-cultural communication that requires people to do some research on them, we have to establish a good awareness of cultural customs differences, focus on understanding some of the most basic customs differences, and try to avoid causing some unnecessary trouble or misunderstanding. 

Due to the differences in personality and communication between Chinese and Westerners, English and Chinese have different verbal habits and greetings, and they have different common greetings topics, salutation, taboo topics and non-verbal greetings.

Greeting is a common polite behavior. No matter in China or in the west, people should say hello to friends or acquaintances. But Chinese and Western greetings are different. Different nationalities have different cultures, histories, customs and customs, etc. if we don't pay attention to the differences between Chinese and Western greetings, we will have many negative effects, for example: the words do not express the meaning, or do not conform to the habits of expression. This will lead to unnecessary misunderstanding and embarrassment. These are the things we should learn to avoid .

The article mainly discusses the differences in greetings between Chinese and English as the starting point of the differences in customs.

Chinese greetings are more conservative and reserved, while western greetings are more open and diversified
