Scarlett and Melanie in Gone with the Wind.

Literature Review

The novel "Gone with the Wind" is written by American writer Margaret Michel and is one of the most popular classic novels in the world. The novel successfully reproduces the civil war during the Lincoln period and the social life in the southern region of the United States through the description of the characters' customs, manners, words and deeds, spiritual concepts, and political attitudes. One of the reasons for the popularity of the novel "Gone with the Wind" as a world classic literary masterpiece is that it has portrayed many vivid characters. The author Michelle created many traditional and non-traditional female images from her own female perspective. As the two most representative female characters in "Gone with the Wind", Scarlett and Melanie have always been the focus of enthusiastic discussion in the literary world. Many scholars have devoted themselves to studying the character traits and love concept of these two female characters. However, few scholars have explored the friendship between the two. Later, I will discuss the arguments of these two female characters in British and American literature.

Observation shows that in the era of globalization, literary works with global influence are playing an increasingly important role in the growth of women. In the past, the research on the growth of Scarlett and Melanie focused on the role of patriarchy, the role of their personality and the relationship between the sexes. For example, Li Qiuhong (2010) in "Father's Love That Never Flies-On the Image of Father in the Novel "Gone with the Wind"" narrates the image of the father described in the work from a male perspective, thus reflecting the father’s role has a huge impact on the heroine's character formation and growth. [1] In addition, Zhang Yungan (2017) starts from the perspective of feminism, deeply analyzes the two heroines' different personality traits, outlook on love and outlook on life, and further analyzes the relationship between the sexes reflected in the novel. [2] Li Jinglin(2015) and Yang Zhiguang (2012) analyse Scarlett’s love and marriage from different perspectives.

With the vigorous development of the feminist movement and the rise of feminist awareness, more and more attention has been paid to the growth of women from the perspective of friendship. More and more scholars are focusing on studying the friendship between women, which opens up another relatively novel perspective.

The friendship between female subjects portrayed in the novel "Gone with the Wind" is not the stereotype of female relations described in general text novels. As scholar Song Xiaoping(1996) said, “More often, women are jealous and intrigue. Various newspapers and novels seem to be anti-copying to prove and deepen the impression that women are cruel to women, and women do not like women."[3] In some parts of the plot of this book, Scarlett and Melanie help each other and make progress together, which is rarely mentioned by scholars.

In summary, all the above-mentioned studies have provided valuable opinions on the study of female roles in "Gone with the Wind". However, there seems to be a lack of in-depth and detailed analysis of the friendship between Scarlett and Melanie, which will definitely enable people to understand the spiritual connotation of the work more deeply. Therefore, my research is expected to make some contributions in this direction.
