(一)Research Status
Jane Austen (1725 - 1817) is an English novelist in 19th century whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature, her realism and biting social commentary cementing her historical importance among scholars and critics. She started writing at a very young age. Her family spent much time in group-reading and in performing theatricals. It was such environment that Jane Austen’s literary talent was being cultivated and developed. Her first novel《Sense and Sensibility》had been published in 1811, which she wrote under the pseudonym "A Lady". Her masterpiece《Pride and prejudice》had been published in 1983. This novel was later written in the film and read widely all over the world. Some literature lover began to research Jane Austen from this novel. The main agronomic characters of the marriage as a typical cases in books how to influence their marriage value orientation of money. The other best-known novel is 《Emma》which was published in 1815.
From the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, " sentimental literature" and " gothic novel" flooded the British literary world. " sentimental literature" was a literature trend that took place in Britain in the late 1860s and late 1980s. It is named after the British writer Stern's novel 《Sentimental travel in France and Italy》. The representative person is Rousseau and Voltaire in France, Stern, Goersmith and Gray in England, Karamzin in Russia, Richt and Heine in Germany. It shows the dissatisfaction of the social reality of the contradiction, and also reflects the resistance of the rationalism and classicism advocated by the aristocracy. The advocate of the 18th century were accepted by the advocate, who were the forerunners of the romantic genre. The ruins of the gothic architecture have nurtured these feelings by suggesting that the creation of human beings will inevitably decay, and these emotions are also linked to anti - Catholic church created by the reformists. "gothic" is used in literary schools, mainly because of the theme of this genre to explore such extreme feelings and some black topics, and the gothic background is usually gothic: the abandoned ramshackle castle, the monastery. They focus on the gothic related architecture, art, poetry ( see the cemetery poet ) and even gardening.
Jane Austen’s novels deal with country landed gentry, the subject matter is always centered on a young girl who either about to be married or ready for it. Houses, money, estates run like an undercurrent through many of her novels. Clarity, economy, skillful use of dialogue and tight plotting are the main feature of Jane Austen’s style. There is always a neat, rounded and rather satisfying completeness to her plots, and in an undemonstrative way she is an extremely competent story-teller. Although the scope and depth of her works is limited, her works, such as " two - inch ivory tusk ", peep from a small window to the social form and the worldly wisdom, has a good effect on the vulgar culture in the novel creation, and has a bearing on the development of the British novel, and is known as the writer who" can play ping with Shakespeare ". She is A legendary woman in the history of British literature.

(二)Research Results
《Pride and prejudice》is often praised by the 20th century literary critics and literary historians as the truly great British novelist, because she makes British novels perfect, so her novel is the most classic novel.
《Sense and Sensibility》has been adapted for film and television a number of times, including a 1981 serial for TV directed by Rodney Bennett; a 1995 movie adapted by Emma Thompson and directed by Ang Lee; a version in Tamil called Kandukondain Kandukondain released in 2000; and a 2008 TV series on BBC adapted by Andrew Davies and directed by John Alexander. An upcoming adaption is an American drama-romantic comedy film titled From Prada to Nada which was adapted by Luis Alfaro, Craig Fernandez, and Fina Torres to be a Latina version of the novel with an expected release date of January 28, 2011." Jane Austen is a comic artist," said the British writer and critic T.T Kebble, and thought that she was " second only to Shakespeare in the art of pure comedy ".
Thomas Macauley, a famous historian, poet and political commentator in the 19th century, called her " Shakespeare in prose ".
Even some critics believe that:
" the most close to ( Shakespeare ) of the writer is to count Jane Austen, and the woman is the pride of England. She created a large number of characters for us ... " ( Thomas Babington Macaulay ). Another one who compared her to Shakespeare was the modern American critic Edmund Wilson. " for more than a hundred years, there have been several interesting revolutions in Britain," he said. The renovation of literary tastes has affected the popularity of almost all writers, but Shakespeare and Jane Austen are enduring. " praise for the writers of Austin. Virginia Woolf once said, " among all the great writers, her greatness is the most difficult to capture. ”
In our country, many critics have commented on Jane Austen's narrow life, the works is trivial and one-sided, so they have not received the corresponding attention and research. The research results of Ms Zhu Hong in the 1980s restored their rightful place in the history of world literature and corrected the prejudice of the Chinese people. Mr Sun Zhili, the famous translator, also translated six of her classic works.
