It goes without any doubt that Chinese English language teaching (ELT) did achieve some success in providing learners with the essential knowledge of the language and its culture as well. Linguists and scholars began to be aware that the idea of culture teaching in ELT shouldn’t mean the teaching of target culture only. Culture learning does not purely refer to target language culture, home culture should be taken into consideration in language teaching and learning. In China, English is not only a resource to learn foreign cultures but to facilitate cultural exchange between China and other world. In college English teaching, too much attention to western culture or Chinese native culture will result in extremely situation, the fundamental solution is to consider integrating Chinese and western cultures and keep them balanced. Therefore, there is an increasing number of researches and discussions about emphasizing the importance of integrating Chinese traditional culture into ELT in China. As a result, more college English textbooks have been changed catering to the new requirements. Such as New College English, not only does the course book involve Chinese traditional culture, but also the curriculum setting is becoming more and more reasonable. The major contents of the textbook include humanity, sociology, emotional aspects. As China moves towards the world gradually, there are more and more knowledge points of Chinese elements in College English textbooks. The content of the textbook is absorbed by the traditional understanding way of thinking in China. Course content setting has been accepted by the majority college students. And improve the college students’ interest of English learning effectively. Personally, I prefer to look at the Chinese culture in English textbooks, although there have less content about Chinese traditional culture. It seems that teaching Chinese proverb or story is popular with students In English class because of the feeling of closeness. In addition to about 20% of length of textbook is to introduce Chinese culture, the others are based on the world culture. Of course, the setting is also very reasonable.
Lan(2003) conducted an investigation into English majors’ expressiveness of Chinese culture in English. Her study showed that both teacher and students of English major had a strong belief that it is necessary to transmit Chinese culture to foreigners in real cross-cultural communication and to develop the students’ ability to preset Chinese culture in EFL teaching and learning. From the investigation, it is also found that the current culture teaching of EFL in Chinese colleges and universities lays its stress much more on western culture or English-speaking countries’ culture rather than on Chinese culture and the interaction between western and Chinese culture. It neglects the development of students’ holistic cross-cultural communicative competence.
Cui Gang, in his representative book Studies on English Teaching in China, point out: Only after they mastered the native culture abundantly can the learners realize western culture accurately, and according to the respective language and cultural requirements, it adjusts our behavior in language communication process rationally.  The infiltration of Chinese culture in college English prompt the student to compare Chinese with western culture objectively. To improve students' cross-cultural awareness is conductive to sucking up western excellent culture and introducing Chinese excellent traditional culture. For now, it is clear that we have done a lot to integrate Chinese and western cultures in ELT. There is a large number of learners who are able to speak English extremely fluently in the international communication. Nevertheless, we lack people who can express the Chinese traditional culture in English, or it is only a matter of time before we do. At present, with more and more professors have paid attention to integration of Chinese culture into ELT, I think there are more and more textbooks about Chinese traditional culture will be appeared in our course. I am going to discuss the thesis by analyzing the college textbooks and extracurricular datum. I hope it can be helpful to the spread of Chinese excellent culture.
