Gulliver's Travels is a fairy tale written by Jonathan Swift, The work purports to be a travel book, and describes the shipwrecked Gulliver's encounters with the inhabitants of four extraordinary places: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the country of the Houyhnhnms.it contains an astute analysis of the nature of Jonathan Swift's satire. Gulliver's Travels  serves as a biting satire, and Jonathan Swift ensures that it is both humorous and critical, constantly attacking British and European society through its descriptions of imaginary countries. This article will from the literary technique and the content of this novel, combine the research and article of Gulliver’s Travel. Through the other’s view to express the idea and through turgidly description to deepen the idea, satire art in the novel from beginning to end.

1.Introduction

1.1. Introduction of Jonathan Swift: 

Jonathan Swift, Anglo-Irish satirist and political pamphleteer, considered one of the greate, Gulliver’s Travels is the most famous book. He is the master of satirist.

1.2. Introduction the main content of Gulliver's Travels: describes the shipwrecked Gulliver's encounters with the inhabitants of four extraordinary places: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the country of the Houyhnhnms.it contains an astute analysis of the nature of Jonathan Swift's satire. Gulliver's Travels  serves as a biting satire, and Jonathan Swift ensures that it is both humorous and critical, constantly attacking British and European society through its descriptions of imaginary countries.

1.3 Orientation of the research：from literary technique and analysis of the content of Gulliver’s Travel to study the writing techniques of Gulliver’s Travels

2. this part starts from literary technique to study technique characteristics.

2.1. narration technique: Jonathan Swift using the first person “I”writing this story, but in order to deepen the humor and irony , and more objective to express his idea, he using other person’s view to decries, for example, view of the king of Brobdingnag. Jonathan Swift express the comment through the view of the king to describe the society of England and Englishman, the first person “I” transfer to a bystander.

2.2. turgidly description through number and proportion

2.2.1 number description: Jonathan Swift describe the number turgidly in order to express Gulliver’s lot , deepen the irony of this book. For example, in the Liliput, one hundred people of Liliput delivery the food to Gulliver, twenty cars carried a large of meet, ten cars carried wine, but Gulliver eat all food in few seconds.

2.2.2 proprtion description: in the Liliput and Brobdingnag, Jonathan Swift describe turgidly the body’s proportion. In the Liliput, the height of Liliput just six inch , one-tenth of European, but Liliput is avaricious, cruel and warlike, same as European, the people of Liliput think the giant----Gulliver is a hero. But in the Brobdingnag, Gulliver just a half tall of the people of Brobdingnag, like a weasel, Gulliver was bullied by many people even the dwarf. Jonathan Swift satirize human being’s conceit, arrogance, insignificance and abjection.

3. Analysis of writing techniques from the calligraphy of Lilliput, article style of Brobdingnag, word-formation of Laputa and language of the country of Houyhnhnms satirize England’s language of 18 th century nonstandard, limitation and coarseness.

3.1. Calligraphy of Lilliput: people of Liliput likes writing words at a tilt from one corner to another corner, same as the women of England. As 18 th century, women think write the word askew is very modern. Jonathan Swift using humorous tone satirize the appearance of 18 th century’s calligraphy is nonstandard.

3.2. Article style of Brobdingnag: people of Brobdingnag like easy and smooth and not aureate style of article,  Jonathan Swift celebrated this style of writing in this book, express he like sample and clear’s style of article, innuendo the appearance of 18 th century’s language is nonstandard.

3.3. Word-formation of Laputa: in this part, Jonathan Swift describes the origin and derive of the name of Laputa . In the novel, Swift describes the word LAPUTA  is    constituted by LAP and UNTUH, but it’s without any basis. It’s satirize the appearance of some linguists misuse derivation. 

3.4. Language of the Country of Houyhnhnms: Jonathan Swift celebrated the language of the Houyhnhnms can expresses feelings well, elegance, meaningful, sample and easy spell, Jonathan Swift compare the language of the Houyhnhnms to the Highland Holland language , he think the language of the country of Houyhnhnms compare with the language of Europe is more elegance, it’s definitely attacking the language of  Europe , satirize the some language of Europe is very coarse.

4.Conclusion

This article from literary technique and analysis of the content of Gulliver’s Travel  to study the writing technique of satiric art. Hope this article will helpful to study satire technique.
