Film translation is a new field of research. Compared with western countries, the study of film translation in China is still late. So far, there has not been a mature theoretical system. In 1991, Luyken worked with four film and television translation experts to publish the book "Overcoming Language Barriers in Television:Dubbing and Subtitling the European Audience ". These two lays the foundation for the study of future film translation studies.

In 1995, the non - profit nongovernmental organization, the European film and television translation Association (ESIST), was founded by 16 teachers from 10 European countries who love film and television translation.
