一、Literature Review

(一)Related research abroad
 Ruth Benedict's Patterns of Culture (1934) is the introduction to the widening of horizons in a comparative study of different cultures, through which we can see our own socially transmitted customary behavior set beside that of other and strangely different people (Benedict, 1959: Preface). Her studies of primitive societies lend support to the doctrine of cultural relativity, too. 
 Edward T. Hall, whose contributions as mentioned above are so huge that his influence, needless to say, can never be ignored. He wrote a series of books, such as The Silent Language (1959), The Hidden Dimension(1966), Beyond Culture(19761, The Dance 1983) and so on, in which several distinctive assumptions and perceptions on culture and communication are expressed. Many of his theories, such as "Overt and Covert Culture", "M-Time" and "P-Time", and "Space Speaks" are closely related to the research, which should deserve our good considerations. 


 Communication between Cultures (Samovar et al., 2000) is one of classical works in the field of cross-cultural communication. It consists of ten chapters, some of which provide much valuable information to the research. For example, in Chapter Two, the authors point out that culture is ethnocentric; in Chapter Four, they believe that the deep structure of culture is the main source of cultural differences and in Chapter Ten, they propose several suggestions on how to be competent and effective in cross-cultural communication. 
(二)Domestic research 
Lots of Chinese scholars also make their contributions to cross-cultural communication and its development in China. 
 As early as in the 1930s', Lin Yutang, a world-renowned author, published two of his most famous books My Country,People(1935) and The Importance of Living (1937) in English. In both books, Lin discusses the concept of food and culture in Chinese people's mind respectively. W.L. Langer wrote the comments in Foreign that the books were "the most important and satisfactory books yet written in English on the character, Life and philosophy of the Chinese people" (Lin, 1998: 6) From the above-mentioned, we can find that there have been many books written or researches done on cross-cultural communication; however, the related researches on food culture are comparatively few in number. Even if some researches are made. 
They are sporadic somewhere and haven't formed a system of its own, not to mention the comparative study on food cultures between countries. Therefore, the research that is being done, to some extent, aims to add further researches in the development of cross-cultural communication, and to different food cultures in particular.
