On Idiom Translation from the Perspective of Dynamic Equivalence Theory---开题报告

一、文献综述（Literature Review） 

  Idioms are closely related to people's daily life, cultural development and transformation. Each language in the world contains plenty of idioms. As a special form of language, idiom attracts many scholars' attention to study, especially for these scholars who are studying translation from the point of bilingual to do contrast research. 

  From the literature materials collected, and we can find that the research contents about idioms tend to be diversified. Feng Chao (2010) studied the translation of Chinese traditional idioms in the novel of Wei Cheng(Fortress Besiege), he thinks that in most cases cultural equivalence can be obtained in translating, but sometimes 

cultural equivalence only can be achieved partially because of certain cultural  barrier. In addition, translators should use domestication and foreignization freely so as to achieve as much cultural equivalence as possible. 

  The scholars, who studied idioms from perspective of linguistics, mainly discussed  the definition, classification, characteristics, structure, and rhetoric, etc. of English  and Chinese idioms. Despite that fact that the definition of idiom given by different  scholars is still controversial, the basic meaning of idiom is a fixed way of expressing meaning in a language during the long time of usage, and it is always with vivid image to illustrate profound truth. And the characteristics of idiom are concise and vivid in language form, relative stability of its structure, having rich means of rhetoric diversity and showing connotative meaning. ( Liu Zengmei, 2007; WangLun, Sun Jingyi,2009).  

  Lin Xiaohong, thinks that we can't do translation of Chinese idiom by only seeking 

simple equivalence in literal meaning, but we'd better make an overall analysis of  meaning and function of idioms, and pay much attention to the real effect produced by readers of the source language and target language to achieve better equivalence in meaning and function (Lin Xiaohong, 2007). 

  To sum up, many scholars have put forward different views on idiom translation, and many achievements have been made in the previous studies, but existing difficulties are still found in idioms translation, which make the translators confused during dealing with in translation. Many articles, journals have discussed this topic about idioms translation and made great achievements. However, most discussions do not make a very clear clue. Some of them put cultural difference on the importance, and some of them pointed out some methods to be used in handling idiom translation, they didn't make a systematic and comprehensive study on idioms translation under the guidance of mature theory. Nada's theory of Dynamic Equivalence has been highly valued and has influenced the practice of translation widely. It can be applied as a guiding criterion in English and Chinese idiom translation. Analyzing the translation of Features of English and Chinese idioms, the author tries to explain these useful methods from the perspective of Dynamic Equivalence. But how to deal with these difficulties is very urgent in idioms translation, and the thesis will make an over-view research on idioms translation based on the Dynamic Equivalence theory and try to resolve these difficulties.
