Literature Review
  As China’s economy has flourished and intercultural communication has deeped,Chinese people have more access to western movies nowadays.As the first part which will be encountered by the audience,movie titles play a signnificant role.Some scholars think that the translation of film titles belongs to literary translation and faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance must be put in the first place of the translation requiring that the translation must be faithful to the original title, so many scholars put forward the principle of faithful to the original.Scholars CuiJinzhi said:”Based on faithful to the original,the titles should conform to Chinese cultural characteristics and aesthetic art to achieve graceful words,comcise meaning and strong attraction and influence,and also have cultural value,aesthefic value and commercial value”(zhou shu,2011).As a bridge of cross cultural communication,translation is not only a translation of language,but a cuttural translation.Good title translation is the result of choosing,and adaping to the culture.Some scholars have pointed out that the translation of film titles belongs to the advertising translation,scholars LiQun referred:”The translation of film titles is not translated text,but advertising translation.”The translation of film title as advertising translation will be changed to suit local market,which results in a statement that the titles are converted to the oriqinal”(Xiong Jie,2008).Scholars Zhang Xiaoge mentiored that the translation of film tittles deal with a single word and phrase superficially,but facing two kinds of cultures between east and west in fact,(LiGuifang,2012)
  Because of the lack of guidelines,now the translation of film titles adopts the following methods:the literal translation ,the liberal translation ,the transliteration method,the extended translation scholars Zheng Xiangui argues that due to the language factors and language of the restriction of cultural factors,the translators should have the ability to improve when dealing with a different film ,so the translation of film titles should have the tendency of diversification ,(Xiong Jie,2008).And he puts forward new translating methods:the adapted method,the supplemental method and the creative method.
 Equivalence -based linguistic approaches pay much attention to the source target ,among which some thories argue that any target text,which is not equivalence to the sourcetext ,is not a good translation.However,absolute equivalent cannot alwanys be reached becasue professional translation often  include cases where equivalence is not required.This situation calls for the emergence of a new theory.The functionalist theory was produced  under such condition .The functionalist theory,which is also known as Skopos theory,was proposed between the 1970s and 1980s.It moves its shifts the focus from reproducing source text to producing target text ,that is to say ,its focus is not strict linguistic eguivalence but dynamic functionalism.The development of the Skopos theory wentthrough four stages which were enriched by four eminent contributors:Katharina Reiss,Hans Vermeer,Justa Holz-Manttari and Christiane Nod.
From the perspective of Skopos theory,Liu Xiaohui and Cao Ning(2006,82)discuss the limitations and restrictions of “faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance”jin translation.According to them,rearding movie title translation,before deciding partcular translation approaches,translators should consider the purposes and functions of the target text.Ruan Hongmei and Li Na(2006:138)clim that films are more than a traditional art form.Therefore,functional equivalence and reception aesthetics are not appropriate as the guiding theory.In their opinion ,movie tittle translation is a purposeful  activity,so Skopos theory can be applied as a guiding theory in this process .These researches are the initial exploration into the Chinese translation of Engjish movie titles from the perspective of Skopos theory in china.
In summary,Chinese scholars have not paid enough attention to the study on the Chinese translation of English movie  titles,especially in the light of Skopos theory.In addition ,there are no standandsfor the translation strategies,which lead to many problems in this field .As more and more English movies are transferred to China,it is urget for the translation scholars to enhance and strengthen the study on the Chinese translation of Engjish movie titles.
