Overseas Research
An idiom is a combination of two or more words which function as a unit of meaning. An idiom usually has an implied meaning. English idioms mean an accepted phrase, construction, or expression contrary to the usual patterns of the language or having a meaning different from the language or having a meaning different from the literal. (Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language, 2nd college edition, 1972)
According to W.McMordie:Idioms can not be changed, any word can not be changed, increase or decrease, the arrangement of the words in the idiom can not have any change, once the above changes will destroy the original meaning of the idiom. Some idioms themselves have some word omission, but artificially add will also destroy the idiom. It can be seen that idioms are a language module composed of fixed phrases and sentences.
The translation of idioms can be said to be the most complex and difficult task encountered by translators in translation. Gottlieb thinks that an idiom is difficult to understand the real meaning of an idiom by only looking at its literal meaning.
Thus it can be seen that there has been a deep study of idioms in foreign countries at a very early time.

Domestic Research
Idiom language is the carrier of culture and idiom is the essence of language. Idiom has a wide range of meanings, generally refers to those commonly used together, with a specific form of the phrase, its meaning is often not from the meaning of a single word in the phrase can be inferred. Idioms usually include colloquialisms, aphorisms, proverbs, slang, jargon and so on. Its form of expression syllables beautiful, tonal harmony, or implicit humor, or serious and elegant, concise, vivid image, full of wit, give a person a kind of aesthetic enjoyment. Idiom is the essence of language, it has a strong national color and distinct cultural connotation. English idioms is always a hot spot in the study of foreign language scholars. This is an explanation from Baidu Baike.According to the recent research literature in China, the following viewpoints are mainly found:TAN Zhen.Hua thought that not only must one introduce into the target language the images, metaphors and rhetorical devices of the source language, but reveal its national features and regional flavors as well.
the author thinks that idioms are a whole and cannot be changed. It's the accumulation of people over time that has been agreed upon. Therefore, idioms comes from the culture itself, and the translation of "authentic" cannot be achieved without a deep understanding of the culture. So when translating idioms, cultural information should be taken into consideration.
Zeng Ting said:idiom is composed of two parts: image and semantics, and has three meanings generally : literal, image and implicit. The translation of English idioms is complicated due to the influence of the relationship between image and semantics. Therefore, in the process of translation, it is necessary to follow the principles of accuracy, figurativeness and readability, and adopt the translation strategies of literal translation, equivalence and free translation to deal with the translation of English idioms. This is also the current mainstream, about the principles of idiom translation and translation strategies.
Therefore, the author thinks that when translating idioms, it is necessary to trace its origin, considering its cultural background.Make full use of the three principles and strategies of translation. And the author thinks it is necessary to carry out further and in-depth research.
