Abstract

The difference between eastern and western countries has been regarded as one of the most important topics of linguistic researches and such differences have been influencing the various aspects of people’s life. Translation is one of the activities that has been under the deep influence of cultural difference between eastern and western countries. Since translation involves both the target language and the original language, it requires a translator to master not only the language but also the culture of the two country. Therefore, more and more researchers paid their attention to the researches about the difference between eastern and western culture.

Culture is a complex knowledge system, including moral principles, beliefs, art, law and customs, and so on. Language, as a part of culture, reflects rich and varied cultural phenomena. As an important part of language, idioms are a widely circulated and specific phrase that plays a more and more important role in people's daily life. Because idioms are colloquial, concise and humorous, Chinese and western people are accustomed to using idioms. It has rich cultural connotations, and reflects the differences in history, geography, religion, customs and ways of thinking among different nationalities. An idiom is a phrase or a sentence that cannot be seen from a single word, and must be considered as a whole. Different languages reflect different cultures; different cultures need different language expressions. Idioms are the essence of language and reflect different cultures in different languages. From the broad sense, including Colloquial Idioms, proverbs, allusions, proverbs and fables, due to the different historical background, living environment, geographical environment, customs, religious beliefs, living environment , social conventions and literary tradition, a language idioms are very different from other languages. Idioms are a kind of mirror that can clearly reflect the national and cultural characteristics. It is difficult to translate idioms because of their special cultural origins.

This paper first analyzing idioms definition and some origins of English idioms, then gives some reflection of cultural differences in English and Chinese idioms, finally puts forward some how to deal with cultural factors in idiom translation principles and methods. The purpose is to enable readers to pay attention to the importance of cultural factors in idiom translation, even though the same idiom has different translation methods in different contexts.
