Abstract

Pride and Prejudice is a representative masterpiece written by Jane Austen, by a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th century English society .It has been considered the most important and famous novel written by Austen. At Jane’s times, women’s status is not as independent as today, that is a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, property, and marriage. Women mostly gained financial security and social status by marrying rich and high status husband, so at that time the property and society status is the most important factors for women when choose husband. But the author showed her feminine marriage concept through a vivid and realistic description of marriage and family life.  In this paper ,mainly by analyzing five couples’ love to show what is important factors of a happy marriage .That is happy marriage must base on mutual affection and respect and property and social status. Sometimes, people tend to praise the women married men without considering realistic issues: money, rank, social status etc. Someone believes it to be true love, but the marriage ending is not always happy .The worst result is women married poor men and the poor men never become rich and women disappointed by the forever poor life and then divorced or lived with lots of quarrel. I don’t think it is good to establish marriage without considering economy, but I think we should not just consider economy and neglect love. With the in-depth reading and analysis, we know Austen understands the importance of fortune, there is financial security in either good or bad marriages in her novels. This is the social circumstances and trend at her time. Jane Austen did not gain too much praise, but after her death, her works attracted a lot of attention. Because her novels’ style is realistic, so some famous writers especially male writers criticized her works. But after almost 200 years, after time＇ｓ test ,it proved that Jane Austen is the one of greatest writers in England .Her views on marriage is also very useful for today’s people, and the story is actually happening in our real life.
